It’s truly a sight to behold – longtime Austin resident Walter Payne can often be spotted riding his 1888 replica Penny Farthing bike around town. In case the term “Penny Farthing” doesn’t ring a bell, it’s one of those old-fashioned bikes with a giant front wheel and tiny back wheel. A Man of Many Interests
Walter has always been inquisitive by nature. He loves pursuing new experiences, and his varied list of hobbies is reflective of his adventurous personality. Throughout his life, he has earned his pilot’s license and flown a wide variety of airplanes. He loves restoring and racing cars. He’s practiced tae kwon do and put himself to the test as a rock climber. He enjoys woodworking and knife making. These days, two of his most passionate pursuits are playing golf and flying his hot air balloon.
There’s something else you should know about Walter – he doesn’t approach anything he does halfheartedly. Instead, he holds himself to a high standard and puts in the effort to excel in any endeavor. This approach served him well when earning his bachelor’s degree in economics from UT. It also was the key to his success for many years as the owner and operator of The Area Rug Company, an Austin-based manufacturer of high-quality custom rugs and carpets.
